“The Rise of an Opposition-Free Democracy: A Dangerous Political Trend”

Sanjay Rai | Ishan Samvad,Over the past decade, Indian politics has witnessed a steady rise of a narrative that appears aimed at weakening, discrediting, or eliminating the role of the Opposition in a democratic system. This trend began in 2013 when, during a BJP meeting in Goa, Narendra Modi was given the responsibility to lead the party’s national election campaign. For the first time, he introduced the idea of a “Congress-mukt Bharat”—a Congress-free India.

Since then, this sentiment has resurfaced repeatedly in different forms and slogans: eliminating “Congress culture,” campaigns like “Panja Chhodo,” and persistent attacks on the Opposition under the labels of corruption, dynasty politics, and inefficiency.

Even though Congress secured 99 seats in the 2024 elections, the political effort to marginalize the Opposition has not slowed down. Energized by their victory in Bihar, BJP leaders are actively expanding this strategy nationwide—from Delhi to the southern states.

Amid this broader political landscape, a recent statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Surat has reignited debate. The PM expressed “concern” for the career prospects of Opposition MPs—especially younger Congress leaders—claiming they are not allowed to speak within their own party.

But this raises an important question:
Can a ruling party that has repeatedly sidelined its own senior leaders genuinely worry about the future of leaders in the Opposition?

The Contradictions Within Power

The Prime Minister’s expressed concern appears inconsistent when viewed against his own party’s history. The BJP itself has witnessed several senior leaders pushed into obscurity or symbolic positions.

• After 2002, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee wanted Narendra Modi removed as Gujarat CM, it was L.K. Advani who defended him. Ironically, Advani was eventually placed in a powerless “Margdarshak Mandal.”
• Murli Manohar Joshi had to surrender his seat in Varanasi for Modi.
• The “75-year age rule” applied selectively—strict for some, irrelevant for others.
• Suited-for-power leaders above 80 were given roles like Governor or Minister, but individuals like Subramanian Swamy, Shatrughan Sinha, Arun Shourie, and Yashwant Sinha were isolated without hesitation.

Given these patterns, the claim that the government is concerned about the Opposition’s political future becomes difficult to accept.

Power vs. Voice: What Really Happens in Parliament?

The Prime Minister claims that Opposition MPs are not allowed to speak. But the nation has also repeatedly witnessed scenes where Opposition voices are drowned out by disruptions from the ruling benches, halting meaningful debate.

Take Rahul Gandhi. His speeches make the government uncomfortable because he raises issues such as:

• crony capitalism,
• unemployment and economic inequality,
• farmers’ concerns,
• GST and demonetization failures,
• weakening of institutions,
• caste census,
• misuse of investigative agencies.

These topics strike at the heart of the government’s discomfort. And perhaps this is why a coordinated effort is always visible to target Rahul—recently reflected in a letter by 272 former officials accusing him of being “anti-Constitution.”
The Congress exposed several signatories’ own unethical pasts, raising doubts about the credibility of this “moral campaign.”

The Political Engineering Behind Family Disputes

A similar pattern is unfolding in Bihar. Attempts to amplify internal disputes within Lalu Yadav’s family clearly point toward a political strategy to weaken the Opposition by exploiting personal or family differences.

All these actions direct or subtle trace their origin back to the 2013 slogan of “Congress-mukt Bharat,” which has now evolved into a larger vision of “Opposition-mukt Loktantra.”

The Real Threat: A Democracy Without Opposition

A healthy democracy requires:

• checks on the misuse of power,
• fearless questioning of the government,
• balanced institutions,
• and an active Opposition.

Today, what we see is the opposite:

• deliberate weakening of Opposition parties,
• poaching of leaders,
• framing criticisms as “anti-national,”
• using state machinery to intimidate dissent,
• and building a one-party dominance narrative.

The Prime Minister’s “concern” for the Opposition’s career seems less like genuine empathy and more like a continuation of the larger project to delegitimize opponents.

The danger is not in the rise of one leader or one party.
The danger lies in celebrating a political environment where the absence of Opposition is projected as a democratic achievement.

The Politics of Events and Manufactured Narratives

Since Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, a new political culture has taken root—where events and programs are presented as historical landmarks never seen before.
Statements like “This never happened in 70 years” are frequently used, even when they contradict facts.

This reflects a deep political insecurity. Unable to match leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru—India’s longest-serving and globally respected Prime Minister—the strategy has become two-fold:

1. compare themselves to Nehru in every matter, and
2. belittle Nehru’s achievements to shrink the benchmark.

Similarly, Modi is often compared with Indira Gandhi, widely regarded as the strongest PM. Claims of “surgical strikes,” “zero tolerance for terrorism,” and other strongman narratives are used to project unparalleled strength—while ignoring uncomfortable realities.

For instance:

• A PM who avoids visiting violence-hit Manipur,
• faces diplomatic embarrassments abroad,
• and does not contradict Donald Trump’s false claims about stopping war between India and Pakistan,
  cannot realistically be compared with Nehru or Indira Gandhi.

Terror, Elections, and Suspicion

In earlier decades, terrorism and elections were never linked. Despite many terror incidents in the past, no one doubted the intentions of the government.

But since the Pulwama attack, a shadow of political suspicion has emerged.

Critical questions remain unanswered:

• How did terrorists enter one of the highest security zones?
• Why were CRPF soldiers sent by road instead of air transport?
• Where did such large quantities of explosives come from?

Some argue that Modi’s popularity had plummeted after demonetization (2016) and GST (2017), and that Pulwama helped shift the electoral mood dramatically just before the 2019 elections.

A similar suspicion surrounds the 2024 Pahalgam incident, which sparked nationwide “Sindoor Yatra” campaigns and political mobilization, but delivered no electoral gains as BJP failed to secure a majority.

Now, with the Delhi blast just one day before the second phase of Bihar elections, the same question is resurfacing:
Is this too politically timed?
Is it meant to influence voter sentiment?

The results on November 14 may help answer these doubts.
